Matching tourism spend categories
Hi. I'm doing an analysis which I imagine is pretty common: looking at the impact of tourism spending in a region. I have broad categories of spend data, such as lodging, food, souvenirs, transport costs, etc.; that I'm looking to align to IMPLAN sectors. I can certainly use my judgement here, but I'm curious if you have any general guidance for this or sample spending patterns, especially anything focused on tourist spend. Thanks for any advice.

Hi.
This is almost more of a curiosity question than a practical one, though it does come up practically: If I have tourism spend data that says visitors to an city spend, say $50,000,000 on air transport, and the impact region contains all the arrival airports, what share of that spend do I allocate locally? I can see an argument for half of it, though that seems too high; but presumably there is some local impact at the airports. Happy to get your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi Dan,
Usually, half is accounted for locally. If you have numbers or ratios that report differently, though, you should definitely go with those. 50% might be an over-estimation but it is the best assumption.
