veterinarian employment ratios in occupational matrices
I believe there may be a problem with the 2016 occupational matrices ratios tables. I am working on veterinarians specifically. According to the employment ratios, the industry with the second highest proportion of vets is 460 (market research & misc prof sci & tech). That doesn't make much sense (especially since the ratio is 0.092627) In fact, the top 5 occupations for vet services (459) and 460 are the same. Looking at the BLS occ-emp matrix and OES emp & wage data it seems like there should be very little, if any, overlap.
Utilizing the ratios on study area data the overall ratios of vets employed in vet services compared to total vets come out all wrong (much smaller percentage, likely because total is inflated by spurious vets in 460).
I just purchased the dataset for a project that is way overdue. If you can fix this and send new files fast that would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Barry,
Thank you for your Community post. This is a symptom of the bridging of occupation data to IMPLAN sectoring. For our non-occupation data, we bridge NAICS to IMPLAN according to the table below.

Our occupation source data provides 5-digit NAICS detailed occupation data for:- NAICS 54192 - Photographic Services
- NAICS 54194 - Veterinary Services
Our occupation source data provides 4-digit NAICS detailed occupation data for the parent NAICS:- NAICS 5419 - Other Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services
Because we need to disclose the occupation data and we don't have detailed data for NAICS codes 54191, 54193, and 54199, we bridge 460 to the parent NAICS 5419 (for which we do have the occupation data required to disclose).

As the parent NAICS includes the occupation data of the children NAICS, sector 460 will share many similarities with 459 (the inclusion of occupations such as veterinarians being one of them).
The matrices are provided in an editable format to allow for user adjustments. If you prefer to remove veterinarians (and other occupations) from sector 460, you can adjust the detail ratios by zeroing the ratios for those occupations and then normalize the occupational employment and wage ratios for the industry.Hope this helps and let us know if you have any additional questions.
